Captain Duncan Smith, USN (Ret.)

SEAL Family Foundation

Feb. 07, 2024 12:00 p.m.

Captain Duncan Smith, United States Navy (retired) is the Executive Director of the SEAL Family Foundation. He earned his bachelor’s degree in finance from USC and was commissioned as an Ensign through the Navy’s Officer Candidate School. He graduated from Basic Underwater Demolition /SEAL training (commonly referred to as BUD/S) and served in Special Operations platoons at SEAL Teams 1 and 5.

Duncan transitioned to the Navy Reserve to attend the Anderson School at UCLA, where he earned his MBA. In September 2001, CAPT Smith was mobilized back to active duty in Naval Special Warfare where he served with distinction for an additional 16 years including deployments to Africa, Iraq, Bahrain, and Afghanistan.

With a critical SEAL shortfall, Duncan was selected to establish and lead the Naval Special Warfare Recruiting Directorate, serving as the NSW liaison to Navy Recruiting Command. He also created the concept for and served as the Navy’s lead producer for the film Act of Valor.

CAPT Smith’s military awards include the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Combat Action ribbon, and both the Iraq and Afghanistan campaign medals.

Feeding San Diego

Feb. 28, 2024 12:00 p.m.

Hunger is a complex problem. We can solve it together.

According to Feeding America’s Map the Meal Gap 2023 research, nearly 300,000 people living in San Diego County are food insecure.

By breaking the cycle of food insecurity, we can help our community thrive.

Our mission at Feeding San Diego is to connect every individual facing hunger with healthy, nutritious food.

Just in Time for Foster Youth My First Home
Mar. 02, 2024 8:30 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.

Are You a  SHOPPER - MOVER - or DRIVER?

Rotarians will assist foster youth in setting up a place they can call home. This is fundamental to creating their foundation for success. On March 2nd, 6 former Foster Youth will visit Just in Time’s Distribution Center for a shopping day. There they will select everything they need to create a safe, comfortable, and reliable environment they can be proud of; everything from dressers, nightstands, dining tables and chairs, desks, dish sets, utensils, bedding, lamps, and much more.)

To ensure success, we need approximately 24 volunteers. Each participant will be assigned a team of 4 volunteers to support throughout their shopping experience in the following roles:

•    1 Shopper (Total of 6 volunteers): Helping a youth select items on their wish list and ensure all the items are marked for movers. The shopper will also be taking notes on items selected by the participant.

  • 2 Movers (Total of 12 volunteers):  Once items are selected at the Distribution Center, the mover will move the items to a designated area outside and will help load furniture/household items into the moving vehicles, drive to the youth's home, and unload and move items into the youth's home. There is a lot of heavy lifting, and you must be comfortable lifting heavy items.
  • 1 Driver (Total of 6 volunteers): Help transport items using their SUV, pick-up truck, or a larger vehicle.

We will need volunteers to sign up by February 15th either on our Rotary website or by emailing Judy Rowles (tisirowles@cox.net) with your telephone number and the role you can fill.

Join Rotarians as we step out and perform Community Service on the same day all around the world.
